Teaching Resources

What is Art?

By exposing yourself to many kinds of art can only lead to amazing things. It helps you learn about your own art, your own taste, and what kind of art you want to create for yourself.

Philosophy of Education

I create because I want to bring people together through a platform they enjoy. From indie game studios to ceramic studios, I’ve helped foster a positive community where everyone can share and do what they love. I want to bring this same passion to the classroom and help students discover their own potential. My philosophy is to create learning experiences that will promote engagement, enjoyment, and personal development. As a teacher, I hope to make a space for my students to freely create and express themselves to become their own unique artwork.

Engagement

Students learn by doing. Thus, it is important to promote engagement in the classroom in order for students to implement all the knowledge given to them. Effective learning is active, and getting hands-on with their pieces would encourage greater involvement and dedication to what they’re making. Engagement can be facilitated by teaching new techniques, designs, or methods that students can then experiment with on their own. Challenging students to try something new engages students to become active participants in the classroom space. It’s essential to engage both mind and body in what they’re learning in order for them to fully grasp the information.

Enjoyment

Students do well in activities they’re passionate about. Participation in activities they enjoy can keep students focused and eager about what they’re doing. Making the art room a place students want to be in is the first step. The art room can be a playground, a safe place, or even a stage for self-expression. Art allows students to discover new strengths by delving into a creative space outside their comfort zone. A positive learning environment can build a strong relationship between students and teachers. Through teaching we can inspire students; a teacher’s passion is infectious, interesting, and exciting. Sharing your interests, working alongside students, and discussing new ideas can make the classroom fun.

Personal Development

Students learn to grow as individuals. Creating a supportive and open teaching environment allows students to openly share their pieces and voice. Constructive criticism provides positive feedback for students to improve their artwork and promotes an artist's growth. Sharing and discussing let all students be involved and bounce ideas off each other. Providing individual time with the teacher allows a more personal space for the student to talk about their work. By steering them in the right direction and being a guide for the student can further their journey as growing artists.

As a teacher, artist, and lifelong learner, I ultimately want to help my students to discover what they're passionate about doing. Encouraging students to discuss, experiment, and play in the art room creates opportunities to grow their interests.

Elements of Art & Principals of Design

This unit on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design establishes a foundation for students to analyze and utilize these visual tools for future artworks. Students will spend time observing the different examples of elements and principles of design from the masters and professionals in the field. Together the classroom will examine artists and explain why certain combinations of visual phenomena are more attractive than others. They will then utilize these elements of art and principles of design to create their own dynamic artistic compositions.
